Day 2 – From Alpe di Pices Fanes (Kleinfanes Almen) to the summit of Piz de Lavarela and descent
Route 12 along the plateau takes you to the col of Medèsc (2,533 m, 1.5 to 2 hours). Following the directions to «Lavarela» and then the red marks, a zigzag path will take you to a steep and rocky ridge. This is reached after a grade 1 climb. The route continues to the right along the sheer rock faces of the steep north-east side leading to the base of a chimney-shaped crack. After a grade 1 climb you will reach the col of the final ridge, and followed by an easy climb to the main summit (3,055 m; 2 hours from the col of Medesc). An alternative descent begins from the last col and runs along the ridge to the gorge between the summit and the foresummit (3,000 m; from here to the foresummit, 3,034 m, crossing a 2-metre gap of exposed rock). A steep descent on scree takes you to the col on the ridge (2,885 m). Continuing down to the left takes you to Busc da Stlü, and eventually a flat path (11) which takes you to the Gran Fanes mountain hut (2,104 m, with refreshments; 1.5 to 2 hours from the summit). Heading north passing the Limo Lake and Pass (2,170 m) leads to the Rifugio Pices Fanes and the Rifugio Pederü.
Less experienced hikers should walk up the descent route, which is easier. Expert mountaineers can pass the Piz de Lavarela along the ridge to the Piz dles Cunturines, and from there descend to Gran Fanes.
Parking is available at the Pederü Restaurant.
