Characteristics of the via ferrata: Short and completely secured by steel cables. Short staircase on the vertical sides. Access along a rocky and exposed track, short stretches of free rock-climbing (I and II degree). In spring, in the icy gorge, the weather is notorious as snowfall can last long. Walking across hard snow is eased by a cable, but you should cross with great caution.
Access to the via ferrata: under the Fronza haven, climb along the rocky steps and has some protected stretches, then follow path n. 542 to reach the beginning. The higher stretch will lead you to the beginning by passing the short rock-climbing sections (I and II degree) which are exposed and unprotected.
Technical details: short via ferrata, completely protected with steel cables, a short but simple climb, in spring cross an icy gorge (with steel cables). The second stretch of the course requires an extremely steady foot (climb onto rocks that are not protected, short stretches of rock-climbing, I degree).
Type of the course: 97% steel cables, 3% steps.
Complete gradient of the climb: 420 m, 2 hours.
Complete gradient to the beginning of the via ferrata: 270 m, 1 hour.
Gradient of the ferrata: 150 m, 1 hour.
Descent: return along the via ferrata or go across the Gardeccia wide valley from Passo Coronelle.
Variants for the descent: from Passo Santner haven, a little under the end of the via ferrata, reach the Re Alberto haven and the Vajolet haven (signposted 542), go along the road until the crossroad for the Passo Coronelle (signposted 541). Steep climb towards the pass (signposted 550) and go down on the steep side to the Fronza haven. You will have climbed 430 m (1:30 hours) and the gradient of the descent will be 560 m (1:30 hours).
Public bus from Bolzano to Passo Costalunga – Karerpass.
Drive through the Val d’Ega just below the Karerpass then follow the road to Passo Nigra and end up at Frommeralm.
