From the Passo Vajolan, the climb towards the north side of the Rodda di Vael twists and turns on rocky ground. It is not particularly steep and its steps are in a good condition. The via ferrata is completely equipped with steel cables. As always, it’s good to have a steady step and not to suffer from vertigo.

Directions


Characteristics of the via ferrata: not a particularly difficult excursion, but offers a stupendous panorama from the Gruppo del Catinaccio. Ideal for beginner rock-climbers.
Access to the via ferrata: from Rifugio Paolina (open from June until mid-October) head off in a northerly direction along track n.552. At the first cross-road, turn right and follow the sign-posted 551 and you will arrive at Passo Vajolon.
Technical details: simple climb, with steel cables near the summit.
Type: 100% steel cables.
Complete gradient of the climb: 680 m, 2-2:30 hours.
Gradient until the beginning of the via ferrata: 450 m, 1:30 hours
Gradient of the ferrata: 230 m, 1:30 hours.
Descent: descend along the south-east facing field and at the end turn left (sign-posted) and you will reach the Rifugio Roda di Vael/Rotwandhütte. Return to the Rifugio Paolina along track n. 549 and then n. 532; 2 hours.

Starting point

Rifugio Paolina, 2,125 m; start the climb with the chair-lift. Opening times: 26.05-16.10/ 08:00-12:15, 13:30-18:00 (sometimes 17:30).

Public bus from Bolzano to Costalunga – Karerpass. 

Directions

Drive across Val d’Ega until Passo di Carezza, cable-car chair-lift at Rifugio Paolina.
