Directions
The starting point is the Sella Pass. Take the gondola lift up to the Langkofel Col. If you climb up there on foot, expect to take 1.5 hours for the 480m ascent. From the Langkofel col, take path 525 down to the Langkofel cirque and onto the Langkofel hut (45 min). From the hut, go west into the Plattkofel col. The marked Oskar-Schuster via ferrata runs from the Langkofel hut to the top of the Plattkofel, crossing rocky terrain, steep fault scarps and some sections that are secured with steel ropes. It takes roughly 2.5 hours.
At the start of the climb, go up the ramp (often covered in snow), at the end turn right and continue to a narrow gully. Climb unsecured (do not start climbing two at once!) up to a col at 2853m. Then go right into a gully, up to a little butte, then go left and cross another gully and climb up a slab wall to reach a statue of the Madonna embedded in the rock. From here, go up a ramp to the end of the climb, just before the summit of the Plattkofel.
For the descent, take trail 527 heading south-west towards the Plattkofel hut. From the Plattkofel hut, take the Friedrich-August-Weg (no. 557) back to the Sella Pass.
Variante
Climb to the Langkofel hut from Monte Pana above St. Christina Gherdëina in around 2 hours. Descend from the Plattkofel using path 527 to the Plattkofel hut in 1h, then return to Monte Pana by taking paths 527, 527A, 525 and 30 over 2h.
