This short and easy didactic and naturalistic itinerary, going above the village of Peio, with some information panels helps the visitor to discover a group of fascinating and mystery birds living in the woods of the park Parco dello Stelvio: the woodpeckers.The woods of the park Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio allow the visitors to have direct contact with the wild animals. This is due to the conditions of these places, which are very calm and quiet as only a protected area can be. Here it is easier to see some shy and elusive species like the woodpeckers, which have specifically adapted to the wood life. In order to verify the presence of these birds some presence indicators can be a great help: feeding or nesting holes, feathers, food rests as well as their song that can be heard especially during the mating seasons.

Five species of woodpeckers are native in the park area: the black woodpecker, the European green woodpecker, the grey-headed woodpecker, the great spotted woodpecker and the three-toed woodpecker.

A very easy walk with a short way up at the beginning. It goes above the village of Peio. It starts just after the small football field near to the Austro-Hungarian cemetery on the hill San Rocco, then continue to the place named Valasiccia.
