Knappensteig Prettau
Numerous gallery entrances amidst gentle alpine scenery
Mallets and irons mark the nature trail that begins at the lowest gallery of the Prettau mine, the St.-Ignaz gallery, located at 1500 m above sea level. From there, the trail leads up to the mouth of the St.-Nikolaus-Stollen, also called Herrenbau-Stollen (at the fork in the road to the St.-Ignaz-Stollen, there is a nature trail marker on the right and left – follow the right-hand path). The nature trail runs along the imposing avalanche protection wall and the Waalweg, which in turn leads to the mouth of the St.-Christoph-Stollen. From here, the trail continues to the St. Johannes gallery, 120 metres higher up. Soon you reach the upper mining areas with the St. Marx and St. Sebastian galleries. Pass the St. George and St. Jacob galleries to the last mouth hole (St. Wilhelm gallery). The nature trail ends at the Rötkreuz (2080 m).
