From Bolzano to the Jaufen Pass in the Passiria Valley
This road bike tour takes you up an Alpine pass that connects the Passeier Valley with the Wipp Valley. There are no steep passages via the Etschtal to Merano and on to St. Leonhard. After these pleasant kilometres to warm up, you gain altitude with every step. This road bike route is a foray through South Tyrol's climatic zones and villages.
The start of the road bike tour is in the centre of Bolzano. First from Waltherplatz via Museionsbrücke to Talferbrücke. From there to Grieser-Platz and continue along Vittorio-Veneto-Strasse in the direction of the hospital. Just before the hospital, turn right in the direction of Siebeneich/Terlan. Drive along the hardly frequented Merano state road along the villages of Terlan and Vilpian until you reach Merano. Follow the main road into the centre of Merano and turn off towards the Passeier Valley just before the post bridge. Continue along the main road to St. Leonhard and then turn off onto the pass road to the Jaufen Pass. From St. Leonhard it is another 20 km to the pass with a difference in altitude of just under 1,300 m. . Return as for the journey, but you can enter Merano via the cycle path to avoid the section of the main road via Sinich (at the post office bridge in Merano, continue straight on via the thermal spa square and then follow the signs to Bolzano).
