On the front line. The front line in the First World War that ran through the Dolomites saw drama and human losses in equal measure. Indeed, the attritional war between Austria-Hungary and Italy in the Alps was extreme and brought huge suffering with it. Tunnels were blasted in the glaciers on the Marmolada mountain so that command posts could be sustained, and despite their height, many of the summits were fitted with artillery guns. Today, the main features that bear witness to the period are the precarious mountain supply routes and remnants of gun emplacements.
The tour runs into the neighbouring region of Venetien (Veneto), near Cortina d'Ampezzo, through the Rautal (Val di Rudo) to the Limojoch pass and through the Fanestal (Fanes valley) to the "Ampezzaner Dolomites" nature park. From 1915 to 1917, thousands of soldiers engaged in heavy battles on the northern slopes of the Forame and Tofane mountains. The tour then runs across the Ponte Alto over the vertigo-inducing ravine to the Ra-Stua-Hütte (where you can stop for a meal), through the Salatatal (Salata valley) and up to the Senneshütte at 2120m. For the long descent to St. Vigil (S. Vigilio), strength reserves and effective brakes are needed. In the summer months, expect lots of walkers on the valley path to St. Vigil. Alternatively you can ride on the road from the Pederü guesthouse.
Start at the nature reserve car park ➊ 1250m in St. Vigil in Enneberg, 12km on the road, through the Rautal (Rudo valley) to the Pederü guesthouse ➋ 1540m, continue uphill
