54 Niederjoch - the grey wall: the bitchy transition
The Niederjoch is an ingenious crossing embedded in nature that connects the Penaud Valley with the Vinschgau Valley. This tour is truly not easy. A very steep access road from Karthaus to the Penaudalm is the first, but not the only challenge.
Start above ➊ Karthaus at 1500 m. A steep alpine path with ramps of up to 19% leads to the ➋ Penaudalm at 2320 m. The climb from the alpine pasture to the ➌ Niederjoch at 2730 m is not too difficult, there are even short passages that can be ridden. Once you have reached the Niederjoch, a view opens up that fully compensates for the exertions of the ascent. Up here you simply have to stay a while, enjoy the time and look down on the hustle and bustle of the Vinschgau Valley. On the descent: The traverse of the Graue Wand is technically too difficult to describe as rideable. There is a considerable risk of falling! Short sections are ridable, but should be enjoyed with caution! From 2500 m the path becomes easier and from 2400 m it is very rideable. The descent brings the biker to the mountain station of the ➍ St. Martin cable car on the Latscher Sonnenberg. Finally, you are spoilt for choice whether to take the Monte Sole trail or the Tschilli trail to the Vinschger valley brine and
