Base and starting point
The Schwarzensteinhütte was named after the Schwarzenstein towering to the west of it, but it is not only a base for this magnificent peak, but also for the crossing into the Zillertal and for the ascent of the Löffler, one of the many mighty high peaks in the Zillertal main ridge.

From St. Johann, follow the signposted road up to the car park near the Stallila snack station (1472 m). From there always follow the signposts »Schwarzensteinhütte« on the forest path 23 A (or in parts on the footpath 23) through the Rotbach valley up to the Daimerhütte (1862 m; bar) and up in steep bends to the Rotbachkees. Now follow the path to the end of the valley, then always stay to the right until you reach the glacier slabs. These have been secured with new steps and wire ropes and lead directly to the Schwarzenstein hut (3026 m, summer catering; from Stallila a good 4 hours). Descent: as ascent via the glacier trail: from the hut, descend to the right via rope-secured rocky slopes into the background of a large hollow, then over boulders (and sometimes snow) to the trail junction on the slope and ascent down to the starting point (3 hours). The via ferrata "Kamin" to the Schwarzensteinhütte was destroyed by a rock fall (08.08.2017)!
