The rifugio of lakes and glaciers. A very pleasant itinerary among majestic landscape in the Ortles-Cevedale group and the Stelvio National Park.

Ideal for getting close to some splendid mountain peaks: Cevedale, Zuffal, Rosole, Palon de la Mare, and Vioz. There is the possibility of numerous excursions to the surrounding lakes. A very interesting route allowing probable sightings of the local fauna in the Stelvio Park: Roe Deer, marmots. White Partidge, chamois and eagles.

Author’s recommendation

Taking SAT 123 from Rifugio Larcher you can tour the lakes, which can be found in succession one after the other: Lago Marmotte, Lago Lungo, Lago Nero, Lago del Careser (a hydroelectric basin). From Careser and remaining on the SAT 123, a descent with a number of sharp bends brings you to the Malga Mare car park.

Departure point is the car park at Malgamare, which can reached from Cogolo by way of a narrow asphalted road (10km). From the car park take the SAT 102 running alongside Malga Mare (2.301m), continue through the pine woods until arriving at a scenic plain known as Pian Venezia (Stelvio National Park). From here, the rifugio is just already visible and the path continues on the right of the valley until reaching the destination (2.608m).

From Rifugio Cevedale G. Larcher the view extends from the summit of Cevedale (3.769m) to the glacier de la Mare, and to the antique morains and rocks which bring to mind the the way the glaciers have moulded the landscape.
