From Monte Tonale Orientale there is a wide panoramic view of the Presanella group and the higher part of the Val di Sole. Anhistorical and cultural trail with the possibility of seeing the Austrian system of fortifications on the Italian border. A real open-air museum dedicated to the defence and fortification of Tonale.

Author’s recommendation

Forte Zaccarana was constructed between 1908 and 1914, at an altitude of 2000m on the ridge, which divides the Val Strino and the Val Vermiglio. It was built at the same time as Forte Presanella (on the opposite side of the valley) in order to form a blockade to the Val di Sole and prevent a possible Italian attack from Passo Tonale. During the First World War, it was heavily bombarded. Recently restored it has been included in the project «On the trail of the Great War».

Departure point is the characteristic Ospizio S. Bartolomeo (1.971m) at Passo Tonale. Follow the dirt road for Malga Valbiolo until arriving at the crossroads (2.042m) and take the SAT 161, which, after series of steep bends ascends to Monte Tonale Orientale. Follow the path until reaching an evident ridge, which will take you to the highest point (2.696m). Re-tracing your steps back for a few minutes, descend left in the direction of the below lying military village known as Città Morta (2.493m) where the ruins of the huge Austrian military camp can still be seen. From here take the SAT 137 down towards Val di Strino, until crossing the SAT 160 (known as Borzelait) which continues in descent beyond the steep channels which descend towards Malga Strino, and reaching the ruins of Forte Zaccarana (2.100m), at one time a dominant strategic point in Passo Tonale. From the fort follow the easy path towards Tonale and Ospizio S. Bartolomeo.
