In the upper Vinschgau valley: on the Mittereck mountain
The slopes of the Planeil mountains are mostly steep and sloping, but still grassy high up; the marginal peaks, including the Mittereck, have tame shapes. Climbing them, however, is not as easy as it might seem.
From St. Valentin auf der Haide (1470 m) follow marker 6 south-eastwards on the road leading to "Dörfl", then turn left (still marker 6) and north-eastwards to the foot of the mountain, now turn right on trail 6 quite steeply along the ridge of the forest up to the "Bergl" (2176 m), over the ridge ridge less steeply following the marker up to the Großhorn (2636 m, from the starting point 2:30 hours.), eastwards briefly down to the Plawennscharte (2548 m) and eastwards over the ridge without difficulty up to the Mittereck (2908 m; from Großhorn 1 hour) - descent: as ascent (2:30 hours).
