The mighty L'Ciaval - Heiligkreuzkofel in Alta Badia
Photo: Martin Braito
Distance 8.2 km
From a place of pilgrimage to the summit cross The Kreuzkofel group towers like a giant curtain wall above the Fanesalm. Of the many peaks of the surrounding mountains the Heiligkreuzkofel, also called Punta Cavallo or L'Cival (Ladin) is the easiest.
Take the chairlift from St Leonhard (Alta Basia) to Heilig Kreuz (La Crusc), a traditional place of pilgrimage. From the mountain station it is only a few minutes to the beautifully situated pilgrim church "Heilig Kreuz" (2045 m) complete with inn. Follow marking No. 7 at all times, leading first through woodland with mountain pines, then via a rubble track to the rock formations of Kreuzkofel. The track runs across the mountain's entire western slope up to the Kreuzkofelscharte (2612 m), and a number of rocky passages have to be negotiated.. In places, the track is secured with ropes. From the gorge the path leads northward – gently uphill – over the mountain ridge to the summit cross. Descent via the same route.
