The Lakes Route is a tour designed for those days with strong sunshine, when stopping to sunbathe and swim can be as pleasant as riding a motorbike.

The route starts in "Arabba" and goes towards "Caprile", then you turn towards "Malga Ciapela", where the lifts to the "Marmolada" glacier start; from here you continue to the "Fedaia" pass. When you reach the bottom, you can see the "Fedaia" lake, which is partly natural and partly artificial. Given the low water temperature even in the summer months, it is not recommended to swim here, but a stop to admire the scenery offered by the "Queen of the Dolomites" mountain is undoubtedly a must.

Continue towards "Canazei" and then on to "Soraga" lake, which runs along the road for part of the way. The ride continues towards "Cavalese", then "Ora" to reach the next lake of the day: Lake "Kaltern". Famous for its lido, this lake offers the possibility to practice various sports, such as canoeing, windsurfing or for the less adventurous you can rent a pedal boat.

A few kilometres further on is the "Monticolo" lake, smaller and less crowded than Lake Kaltern; particularly pleasant are the walks along the lake and its surroundings, ideal for stretching your legs after a few hours on the bike. To get to the next lake, take the road to "Sarentino", with its long tunnels carved into the rock. Turn right towards "Renon" to reach the small lake of "Costalovara". Take another road back down towards Bolzano, where you can see the famous "earth pyramids of Renon".

We move from one side of the valley to the other, from Bolzano up to "Fiè allo Sciliar". We recommend a stop at the small lake of "Fiè", awarded in 2013 by "Lega Ambiente" as one of the best ecosystems in Italy, with a water temperature that reaches 23°.

After regenerating by stopping for a break or a swim, the route continues to "Selva Gardena", up to the Gardena pass, "Corvara", "Campolongo" pass and finally back to "Arabba".

Turn-by-turn directions

Clockwise tour: The route starts in "Arabba" and heads towards "Caprile", then turns off to "Malga Ciapela", where the lifts to the "Marmolada" glacier begin. From here, continue towards the "Fedaia" yoke. Once you have descended, you can see the "Fedaia" lake, which is partly natural and partly artificial.

The ride continues towards "Cavalese", then "Ora" to reach the next lake of the day: Lake Kaltern. Famous for its lido, this lake offers the possibility to practice various sports such as canoeing, windsurfing or for the less adventurous you can rent a pedal boat.

Take another road back down to Bolzano, where you can see the famous "earth pyramids of Renon".

We move from one side of the valley to the other, from Bolzano up to Fiè allo Sciliar. We recommend stopping at the small lake of Fiè, which was awarded in 2013 by the "Lega Ambiente" as one of the best ecosystems in Italy, with a water temperature that reaches up to 23°.

After you have regenerated from the stop or the bath, the tour continues to Selva Gardena, up to the Gardena Pass, "Corvara", "Campolongo" Pass and finally back to "Arabba".

Anticlockwise tour: From the centre of "Arabba", start the tour by going up the hairpin bends of the "Campolongo" Pass to "Corvara" and at the crossroads of the village, turn left towards "Colfosco" to reach the top of the Gardena Pass. From here you start the descent and, after crossing the entire valley furrowed by the Val Gardena stream, you reach the junction for the spectacular Alpe di Siusi, where you meet the village of Fiè allo Sciliar with the lake of the same name, which was awarded one of the best ecosystems in Italy in 2013 by the "Lega Ambiente" and has a water temperature of up to 23°.

After the refreshment break, you will reach the entrance of the valley where you will find the signs to Bolzano and to the famous "earth pyramids of Renon". From here you continue the tour towards "Renon" and "Sarentino", where you find the small lake of "Costalovara".

After getting back on your bike, you continue to the small but beautiful lake of "Monticolo", where you can take pleasant walks along its shores and in the surrounding area to stretch your legs from riding.

Continuing along the route, you will reach the large and more famous Lake Kaltern, where, in addition to swimming, there is also the possibility of practising canoeing and windsurfing or renting a pedal boat.

From here you continue along the Adige Valley to the crossroads of Auer, where you take the panoramic road that leads to the Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa. Via "Cavalese" you reach the picturesque "Soraga" lake near "Moena".

After a relaxing and restorative break, get back on your bike for the last stage of the day: after crossing the whole valley and reaching the village of Canazei, turn right at the roundabout to start the breathtaking climb to the foot of the Queen of the Dolomites, the "Marmolada". Once at the top, a spectacular plateau opens up in front of you with a view of the entire imposing glacier and the "Fedaia" lake, which is half natural and half artificial and in which swimming is not recommended due to its low temperatures.

After a descent that will put your brakes to the test, you reach "Caprile" di "Alleghe". At the crossroads in the centre of the village, turn left to reach first the junction of "Rucavà" (turn left) and then the junction of the hamlet of "Cernadoi", where you will find the crossroads with Strada n. 48 delle Dolomiti, which will take you back to "Arabba" with a pleasant up and down.
