The Merano high route combines gentle walks with high mountain treks in the Tessa mountain range. Stretching along almost 100 km and with a grading of over 5000 metres the hiker can get a good feel of the Tessa mountain range and its surroundings. The six-day journey takes in magnificent Alpine landscapes starting from the Valley and reaching an altitude of 3000 m.
The Gruppo Tessa Nature Park, extending over a surface of 33,430 hectares, opened in 1976. Its main objective was to preserve the beauty of a unique mountain landscape and to create a natural habitat. The park stretches between the Val Senales to the West, the lower Val Venosta to the South, the Val Passiria to the East and the Alpi Venoste (Ötztaler Alpen) to the North. The area includes valleys, forests, and high malghe, as well as the steep summits of the Alps and glaciers. The hiker who follows the Merano high route can appreciate the beauty of this Nature Park in its entire splendour. This is a circuit trail of approx. 100 km around the central section of the Tessa Mountain range. The high trail is the result of Helmuth Ellmenreich's idea, who was Chairman of AVS (Alpenverein Südtirol) for Merano from 1962 to 1997.
