The malga (or upland farm where cheese is made) has not existed for some time and can only the ruins remain, because of a large avalanche it would seem. The white ruins stand in the centre of a very special natural structure, a green, completely flat karst hollow, dominated by monte Geu, the Creta Forata and the western outliers of monte Cimon. It is closed on all sides except to the north where sprout the distant, towering rocky ramparts of Peralba and Chiadènis.

This secluded site is worth visiting for the feeling of peace and solitude that you feel and also because you can get closer to corners that are still almost untouched. The trip is easy, sunny and not tiring. Up here the silence is a constant, occasionally broken by the whistles of marmots who are masters of the area. After reaching the destination, for those who still have some “puff”, a trip to the beautiful Geu Alto pass (see itinerary n. 20) is a must.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Cima Sappada, with itinerary n. 8 (in the Walking section) reach the broad meadows that precede the saddle around malga Tuglia. Here turn right (signed) along a good trail that leads to the southwest in the direction of the rocky pyramid of monte Geu climbing, initially through the woods and then along a fairly steep, rocky slope to the Geu Basso pass. With a short descent the path arrives at the unusual flat area occupied by the dilapidated buildings.

Return

To return to Cima Sappada you can take the path used on the way out. By way of an alternative the walker can follow itinerary n. 17 in reverse, thus completing the Geu ring (attention: there is a short section with diff. EE) in 2:15-2:30 hours. Another, faster possibility is that of itinerary n. 19 (attention: the latter has diff. EE)
