This medium-difficulty hike follows historic trails through the unspoilt mountain world of the Valle del Salto. Past old stone settlements on gentle hills and along an impressive gorge between jagged rocks. The old, stony paths, some of which are quite exposed, require good surefootedness.

Destination

Piazza in Maggia

Turn-by-turn directions

From the piazza, walk past the church of Santa Maria del Carmelo and along Via Chiesuola to the northern end of the hamlet of Maggia. Among the vineyards, you go up into the woods of the Valle del Salto. Soon you pass a wayside shrine and begin the climb up a stairway.  At the Madonna della Pioda chapel, enjoy a view of the Maggia valley. Pass the chapel on the right and continue along the stairway path that takes you up to a clearing. At the fork in the path, keep left towards Brione. Passing farmhouses, you cross the Riale di Ringio with the help of a metal bridge. Then cross the tributary to the Maggia over the barrage to the left and then follow the path up the opposite side of the valley. Through deciduous woods, past the old stone houses of Canaà and across a stream, you reach the small settlement of Ceir. At the next crossroads, keep to the right and at the next fork in the road, keep to the left and you will come to a T-junction. Keep left and you will reach a small spur of Maggia. Via the roads Al Büsigian and La Caraa Dal Prèvat, which branches off to the left and then crosses the Riale Salto, you come straight onto the road Al Stradón in Maggia, which takes you back to the starting point, the Piazza in Maggia, with a slight curve to the left.
