Tour of the fortresses
A fascinating circular tour on the southern slopes of Monte Tonale Orientale with views of the glaciers of the Presanella group and passages between the ruins of the Austrian fortresses of the mountain war between 1915 and 1918.

From the Valbiolo chairlift car park, go up to Ospizio San Bartolomeo and continue east (towards the panoramic Tonale alpine pastures), turning left at the first junction. After a short flight of wooden steps, you reach the Forte Zaccarana (a panoramic view of the Alta Val di Sole and the glacier landscape in front of it, from Presanella to Lake Lago Scuro). Continue along the winding military road until you reach the junction with the Vecchia Strada del Tonale. Near the crossroads you can see the ruins of the Austro-Hungarian barracks of Strino, a small military village with warehouses, field hospital and barracks. Then turn right and you soon reach the Forte Mero fortress and the adjacent picnic area. Continuing towards Tonale, you leave the woods again and walk across meadows to Ospizio S. Bartolomeo and return to the starting point.
