The water reservoir
The lake is located above the miners' village of St .Martin, which in turn lies in the middle of the abandoned mine on the Schneeberg. It served as a water reservoir for the mining operation, as an old water channel leading from the lake to the Schneebergscharte shows.

From the bridge where the Timmelsjochstraße road crosses the Schneebergbach stream in the farthest Passeier valley shortly before the "Saltnuß" inn (1666 m; signpost) on trail 31 through forest and over alpine pastures, mostly only moderately steep northeastwards up to Seemoos (remains of mines here), further up to St. Martin. Martin (2355 m, from the starting point 2:00 hrs) and north-eastwards on marked tracks over stony grassy slopes in 1:00 hrs moderately steep up to the Schwarzsee (2609 m). Descent: via the aforementioned old Wasserwaal on a level slope traverse southwards to below the Schneebergscharte, on trail 28 back down to St. Martin and on the ascent trail back to the starting point (from the lake 2:30 hrs).
