Distance 8.6 km
Target: Sas Rigais Under the peaks of Mount Odle (Geisler), to the Malga Casnago (Gschnagenhardtalm) alpine pastures
At the southern parking area in Zans, at the head of the Funes (Villnöss) Valley (1,670 m), you’ll find a number of signs (marked No. 34) pointing to the Gschnagenhardtalm alpine farm; the broad road soon goes slightly downhill, heading west, for about 50 metres. Then you’ll turn left onto a good hiking footpath, which is decently wide but unmarked (known as the Jägersteig Trail). After walking west through flat woods for some time, you’ll come to a crossroads: go straight ahead onto a narrow tract a little further until you reach a mountain hut in the forest (1,670 m). From that point on, it is an unmarked, unpaved forest road (marked No. 34 on maps) that makes sweeping switchbacks (with almost no shortcuts possible) through steep forests up to some meadows and the lower and upper mountain huts (both serve food; upper hut is at 1,996 m); 1.5 hours from Zans. Descent: Same as ascent; a good hour.
