The tour through the middle of the enormous saddle between Sassolungo and Sassopiatto is one of the greatest experiences in the Dolomites that is possible for normal hikers.

When you're out and about in Val Gardena in the Dolomites, the rocky massif of the Sassolungo with the Sassopiatto and the Five-Fingered Peak is simply omnipresent. Standing freely, the rock massif is actually permanently visible and always draws the eye. Normally, the vertical rock faces are reserved for climbers, and hikers circle the massive block in a rather long loop. But if you look closely, from the Sella Pass you can see an old-fashioned-looking gondola lift with small white two-person gondolas that lead up 700 metres in altitude to the rocky embrasure. Using the cable car for the ascent, the tour through the Langkofelscharte turns out to be a feasible hiking undertaking. In the midst of giant rocks, you feel tiny and the sun barely reaches the ground where the walls are close together. The arduous descent in the steep part of the saddle is soon over and the path follows the walls of the Sassolungo very closely.
