Interesting hike with historic-cultural parts, on the tracks of the Austrian fortification systems of the First World War on the Italian border. From the western wall of the Monte Tonale, your eyes wander over the Presanella mountains and the Upper Val di Sole (Sun’s Valley).

From the Ospizio Bartolomeo (1,971 m) near the Tonale pass on the gravelled road in the direction of the Valbiolo alp. You will come to a junction (around approx. 2,042 m) with SAT no. 161, which (starting on a narrow path, eventually on steep and long hairpin curves) leads up to the hillsides of the western wall of Monte Tonale. You follow the path until you reach the mountain ridge and the highest point (2,969 m). Follow the same path back for some minutes, then deviate to the left in the direction of the Austrian military village “Città Morta” (“Dead City”; 2,493 m). On SAT no. 137 you continue in the direction of Val di Strino until you come to a junction with path no. 160 (Borzelait). This path leads downhill (steep troughs) in the direction of the Strino alp until you reach the ruins of the Forte Zaccarana (2,100 m). Here you can continue on a comfortable path in the direction of the Tonale pass and reach the starting point Ospizio di San Bartolomeo.
