Surefootedness and a head for heights are required for this hike
Circular hike with stunning views along rocky ridges.
From Plaus near Lagundo take the chair-lift to the village of Velloi (966 m; also accessible by road) and then take the cable car to the Leiteralm alpine hut (1,522 m; restaurant open all year). From the alpine hut take route 24 in the direction of "Meraner Höhenweg" (the Merano High Route on the Hans Frieden footpath, which runs eastwards gently downhill through the woods as far as a dramatic gorge; proceed across an almost level ground on a steep sided rocky ridge enjoying spectacular views in the sunshine to reach the Steinegger mountain hut (with refreshments) and then a brief ascent to Mount Hochmuth (1,351 m, terminal at the top of the Tyrol cable car); from the Leiter alpine hut 1.5 hours. From Mount Hochmuth take the well signposted Vellauer Felsenweg (no. 22), then cross the dizzying slope in a westerly direction; in the trickiest parts fixed chains are provided for safety. Following a series of flat and downhill sections and finally through the woods you'll reach the village
