The Knieberg, a magnificent mountain in Sexten
Untroubled summit ascent in the Sesto Valley in Alta Pusteria. Where hiking becomes an experience.
From the Kreuzbergpass (1636 m; road up from Sexten, inns) always follow Mark. 131 on forest tracks and footpaths north-eastwards through hummocky forest terrain over and up to the Nemesalm (1877 m; restaurant; from the pass 11/2 hours), from there on the good trail 146 through grassy slopes eastwards into the background of the small Grenzbach valley, then partly in serpentines up to the Kniebergsattel (2329 m, various signposts). Turn right here, on trail 148 crossing stony slopes in an easy ascent to the southeast ridge and up on a steep mountain trail to the summit (2503 m; from Nemesalm 2 hours). - Descent: From the summit, descend again to the southeast ridge, now westwards on wide trail 173 in switchbacks through grassy slopes down to the forest, westwards in a partly level traverse to Malga Rinfreddo (1880 m, inn); continue on the little road over Casera Coltrondo until trail 173 branches off to the right (signpost "Kreuzbergpass"), and follow this on footpaths and forest tracks
