Leg 1 of the Alta Via della Val Venosta (Vinschger Höhenweg) high trail runs from Juval Castle near Stava (Staben) in the Lower Val Venosta (Vinschgau) Valley to San Martino al Monte (St. Martin in Kofel).

The first leg of the trail leads from Reinhold Messner’s Juval Castle, situated above Stava (Staben), and runs along Monte Sole (Sonnenberg) Mountain and Monte Trumes (Trumsberg) Mountain to San Martino al Monte (St. Martin in Kofel). This is a long leg, which covers a bit of altitude differential. During the summer months, it is definitely a good idea to undertake this somewhat lower-lying leg in the early morning: Monte Sole (Sonnenberg), which translates to “Sun Mountain”, does not bear its name in vain!
