A hike to four alpine pastures near Merano (Meran)
From Saltusio (Saltaus) in the Outer Val Passiria (Passeiertal) Valley (490 m), take the Hirzer cable car up to the intermediate station at the hamlet of Obertall (1,375 m; you can also drive to this point; tavern). Continue on the cable car up to the Klammeben summit station (1,980 m; tavern). From there, the trail is clear (marked No. 40) and descends first down steps over rocky terrain, and then across slopes over to the Hirzerhütte mountain hut (1,983 m; Tallner Alm Tavern). From there, head up to the old Tallner-Alm-Hütte mountain hut (2,017 m), then on a good, pretty trail (marked No. 1), partly across alpine pastureland and partly through larch forests, on a mostly flat, hour-long hike over to the old, rustic wooden hut of the Hintereggalm alpine pasture (1,990 m; serves food).
