This hike leads high above Merano (Meran), between the Leiteralm and Hochmut mountain huts.

Ascent: Start out from Velloi (Vellau) above Lagundo (Algund) at 966 metres (which you can reach from Plars, either by driving or on the chair lift). Take the chair lift or walk along Trail No. 26/25a across Kieneggerhof Farm up to Oberplatzer Farm (both farms serve food), and turn right on Route 25a to the beautiful Leiteralm alpine farm (1,522 m, open all year round, serves food); a good hour from Velloi. High Trail: from the Leiteralm alpine farm, follow the Hans Frieden Trail (marked No. 24), first east through the woods, slightly descending, to a wild gorge; then, it’s a sunny and scenic hike, almost flat, across mostly rocky steep slopes to Steinegger, where you can get a bite to eat, and just below, to the Hochmuter Tavern, which enjoys stunning open vistas (1,350 m; open year round; mountain station of cable car from Tirolo (Dorf Tirol); about 1.5 hours from Leiteralm.
