The first part of the path, which crosses the woods, is easy, mostly flat, and suitable for all kinds of hikers. It can be accessed in almost all seasons: there is enough shadow to stay cool during the summer times, and during the winter months the area turns into a winter wonderland.

Once in the gorge, the terrain becomes slightly more difficult, due to the stairs and passageways which have been built to descend the gorges. The descent into the Rastenbach gorge is very suggestive, the path follows a river bed and you can admire waterfalls, alternating with lust and wild vegetation.

The landscape at the end of the gorge changes dramatically and it opens on the view of the lake of Caldaro. A small climb is required to reconnect to the main Friedensweg trail (path of peace), which will lead you back to Caldaro.  If your children are passionate about nature, this is a perfect opportunity to descend a gorge in safety.

Author’s recommendation

Once in the gorge, the temperature drops, thus always pack a heavier garment.

Safety information

Once in the gorge the terrain becomes slightly more difficult, due to the stairs and passageways which have been built to descend the gorges and the humidity, you should walk slowly and not rush. Also, a small climb is required at the end of the gorge where you should be careful because the terrain is a bit rocky and it may be slippery, especially during winter and when wet.

Tips and hints

The gorge is quite crowded during the summer months, however, you will not find as many people on the Friedensweg trail (path of peace).

Turn-by-turn directions

Park your car at the main parking lot of the outdoor sports complex in Caldaro and enter the woods towards the soccer field. You will pass by a kids' playground and a lake on your right-hand side and finally find signs for the Friedensweg trail (path of peace). Follow these signs and stay on the Friedensweg trail, walking on a flat path through the woods. You will pass by two artificial lakes and encounter the stations along the path of peace. Once you reach the proximity of the gorge, follow the path that winds down entering into the gorge (Rastenbach gorge), and descend until you encounter the river. This is when you will abandon the Friedensweg trail in favor of the river. Walk along the stairs, bridges, and passageways until you reach the waterfall. From there you will start going up again to reconnect to the main trail Friedensweg trail , nr. 13, and make your round circle back to Caldaro.
