19 PIANI DEL CRISTO by the Piave nature trail - Sappada
Hiking trail
· Carnia
The provincial road no. 22 of Val Sesis, after the first narrow series of steep bends, suddenly opens onto a wide and very long plain whose northern border is formed by the so-called Pian delle Bombarde and the southern by the Piani del Cristo. The spot takes its name from the Crucifix that stands at the start of the plateau immediately after the bridge. The beautiful building of the shelter is a couple of yards away.

This walk is an excellent way of getting to the Piani del Cristo from Cima Sappada since it allows the heavy vehicular traffic and exhaust fumes to be avoided, climbing through the forest alongside the Piave, which flows powerfully at this point. This simple, pleasant and not at all strenuous route leads to the start of the long level stretch of the Piani del Cristo and the shelter.

Turn-by-turn directions
From the square in Cima Sappada, take the Val Sesi road on the left and follow it for almost a kilometre. Ignoring the fork leading to the Vecchio Mulino, continue to the clear sign on the left bearing the phrase “sentiero naturalistico Piave" which marks the start of a track through the forest that gradually descends towards the Piave. At the river bank, skirt the river for a while until reaching the easily-climbed boulders, then start to climb the wooded slope to a bridge and cross to the other bank. A few metres further on, it joins the provincial road at the first hairpin bend: follow the natural course of the path and follow a lane that runs from a small clearing alongside a pretty chapel dedicated to S. Maria di Luggau. A little further, cross the river by the footbridge and, from here, along a convenient path, climb the last stretch to the destination.
The descent can be made along the same route or the following one.
