The Da Camino were a powerful family that from the twelfth century to the fifteenth century exercised its dominion over a large territory that from Sacile and the south of Oderzo extended across the entire Pedemontana to Feltre and along the Piave valley to reach the gates of Cadore. Traces of this domain remain in the sites of various castles, of some of which only ruins remain. Piai Castle is mentioned for the first time in a document of 1198 with the name of “Castrum Fregone” and achieved its maximum splendour in the following two centuries.

Rizzardo VI is the last of the Da Camino family to have lived in the castle and his dynasty ceased when he died in the battle against the bishop of Aquileia. The castle was destroyed in the 15th century, presumably by the armies of Pippo Spano.

Turn-by-turn directions

Once you have left the car in the car park near the Grotte del Caglieron in Fregona, take the path close to the retaining wall to the east of the bridge (trail sign 1037a) which, climbing up, after passing in front of a house, goes into the hazelnut wood until you cross the dirt road that leads to the ruins of the Castle. Continuing along this road, keeping to the right, in a short time you will reach the top of the hill where the remains of the ancient Da Camino castle are located. Going back on your steps, retrace the path back to the previous crossroads from where you continue to the right for about a hundred meters until you enter Via Borgo Ciser, the asphalted roadway which, taken to the right, leads to the town of Sonego passing in front of the former parish church and crossing the bridge over the Carron stream. Always keeping to the right, go down to the Piai intersection where, passing in front of the ancient fountain, you arrive on Via Grotte del Caglieron, returning, in about fifteen minutes, to the starting point.

Public transport

Public transport doesn’t reach the starting point of the route. Arriving by public transport it is recommended to stop at the cemetery car park, near the bell tower of Fregona, and continue by foot along the route 1037B "Pont de fer-Grotte del Caglieron" (see route), which directly connects the parking lot to the Parco delle Grotte and consequently also the path in question. Instead, if you arrive with your own vehicle see "how to get there".

Getting there

Coming from the A27 motorway, take the Vittorio Veneto Sud exit and follow the directions for Cansiglio. After about 8.8 km, at the crossroads in front of the town of Fregona, follow the signs for Grotte del Caglieron, turning left. Once inside the park, you can make use of the dedicated parking lots.

Parking

The available parking lots are located inside the Grotte del Caglieron Park, one after the bridge on the left and another before the bridge, continuing straight on up to a roundabout.

In the case that the 2 car parks are full, you can use the unpaved park in the locality of Piai (marked on the map) or that of the cemetery in Fregona.
