The little town of Chiusa, wedged into the Eisacktal valley between the main road and the Brenner Pass motorway, is often overlooked by the cars whizzing by - but this is a mistake. The town centre boasts an astonishing wealth of medieval architectural treasures. Anyone embarking on this medieval tour should therefore allow enough time to immerse themselves in the history of the town of Chiusa. There is a lot to see: the crypt, the parish church, the old Town Hall, to name just a few. And when you're tired of walking, you'll find plenty of cafés and restaurants hidden behind the ancient façades.

Turn-by-turn directions

This tour of the medieval town starts in the market square (Marktplatz) at the northern end of Chiusa. It takes you through the town gates to the part of town called Oberstadt, then south along the alleyway to the Unterstadt and the Tinneplatz square. You continue over the bridge across the Tinnebach stream to the Capuchin monastery garden. Go back over the bridge, left to the Rossmarkt market and along the Gerbergasse to gate to Säben Abbey (Kloster Säben). Continue into the Unterstadt to the Färbergasse alley and along the Eisack Promenade and back to the market place.
