Art nouveau sights in the spa resort town
Exploring walk through the districts of Maiabassa (Untermais) and Maiaalta (Obermais).

Our walking tour begins at the centrally located Piazza Teatro (Theaterplatz) Square. Across from the Civic Theatre, which is named for the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, there is a bus stop and a taxi stand. From there, we turn onto Corso Libertà (Freiheitsstraße) Street. After just a few metres, the high volume of pedestrians reduces. This road, which runs parallel to Merano’s portici (Lauben), or covered arcades, has developed into a popular area for strolling and shopping in recent years. Above the newly installed Piazza Cassa di Risparmio (Sparkassenplatz) Square, Corso Libertà has developed into a fascinating mix of glamorous Art Nouveau architecture on the right and urban shopping architecture on the left side. We will, however, turn up the gently sloping ramp across from Piazza Cassa di Risparmio Square, up to the Passeggiata Lungo Passirio (Kurpromenade) and then make an immediate left. The celebrated Merano Kurhaus, the old spa building, is a nice example of the art
