SwitzerlandMobility 8: Aare Route Stage 1
Bicycle Ride
· Switzerland
The first stage of the Aare route from Gletsch near Oberwald takes you over the Grimsel Pass, then through the Canton of Bern to Biel.
difficult
Distance 181.2 km
The first part of the tour over the Grimsel Pass with its many steep switchbacks requires some degree of physical fitness. But after that, the route is all the swifter, following the uppermost reaches of the Aare river through the Aare Gorge to Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. Bern, the Swiss capital, awaits with its nice selection of shops and boutiques under its famous arcade arches. Cycling along the now fully fledged Aare river, you finally reach the town of Biel, the bilingual capital of the Seeland region.
Note(s)
The Grimsel Pass is open from approx. May to October. The tour can also be done in the opposite direction.
