Mt. Grdi Vršič is the western neighbour of the somewhat higher and more demanding Mt. Hudi Vršič. If the conditions are appropriate, this mountain offers great ski touring experiences in spite of its nasty name. Along this tour, you never approach the Kanin ski slope and therefore experience the mountain area of the Kanin Mountain range in its originality.

The ascent to this mountain on the border between Italy and Slovenia starts above the town of Bovec. Start the tour in the Krnica Valley which you soon leave and continue ascending beneath the walls of Mt. Vratni vrh, Mt. Jelenk and Mt. Pri Banderi. After you overcome the logical passages, continue straight ahead to the sightseeing peak. You should ski down the same trail you came from. This tour is routed along the karst terrain with karst precipices, which is why you should avoid walking along tight valleys and ascend and ski down the small ridges.
Author’s recommendation
We recommend you to take this tour when there is no danger of avalanches. This tour is very appropriate during the spring months if the weather is nice.
You should only take this tour in appropriate snow, avalanche and weather conditions. There is great danger of avalanches at several sections. There is also a danger of rock falling from the walls of Mt. Vratni vrh, Mt. Jelenk and Mt. Pri Banderi, which is why you shouldn’t hike or ski too close to this area. The final ascent to the top represents the only steep section of the tour.
Tips and hints
You can check the current conditions in the vicinity on webcams. The tour is long and overcomes a great altitude difference, which is why you should bring a sufficient amount of food and drinks.
If the road was cleared of snow, start the tour at the parking lot of Station B of the Kanin cableway. Otherwise, start the tour sooner. Follow the road from Station B of the Kanin cableway, and when you arrive to the junction, turn right towards the Krnica Mountain pasture (by turning left, you arrive to Station C of the Kanin cableway). When you reach the mountain pasture, turn uphill to the left and continue through the thin forest until you arrive to the beginning of the lovely Krnica Valley. Soon after you enter the valley, turn to the right beneath the walls of Mt. Vratni vrh, Mt. Jelenk and Mt. Pri Banderi. Continue beneath the walls. When you leave the area of these walls, continue in the same direction towards the mountain crest from the Pobič Mountain pass to Mt. Hudi Vršič. Your destination lies somewhat to the left of Mt. Hudi Vršič. The last section of the ascent is steeper and you might have to use crampons and the ice axe to reach the summit. You should ski from the top down the same trail you came from.
