Monte Cevedale is 3769 m high and lies in the Ortler group. The panorama from the summit on Ortler and Königsspitze is fantastic.

The high-altitude ski tour to Monte Cevedale (3769 m) rewards us with fantastic views after the arduous climb. With the Sulden glacier cable car we can reduce the ascent by a few metres in altitude. The Schaubach hut (2581 m) and the Casati hut (3254 m), which is open during the ski touring season, are good places to stop. The slope orientation is predominantly north-east to north-west. Orientation up to the Casatihütte is easy. If visibility is poor and there are no tracks, however, it can become a challenge from the Casatihütte onwards. Bringing an ice axe and crampons can prove useful, the last metres to the summit are quite steep and often have to be covered on foot, as the slope from the Randkluft onwards often consists of blank ice. The upper part of the Suldenferner and the summit slope of the Cevedale may be classified as avalanche-prone after fresh snowfall. During the inclined descent to the Casati Hut via the eastern flank of the Suldenspitze, pay attention to the upper slopes, as both rockfall and snow slab avalanches can occur here. If the valley descent to Sulden is possible, there is still a descent of almost 1900 metres in altitude. The Sulden glacier lift is in operation until the beginning of May.

Turn-by-turn directions

We take the cable car up to the Schaubach Hut at 2581 m. Here we start our high-altitude ski tour on the Cevedale. From the mountain station we walk flat above a trench in a southerly direction. We cross the ski slope and climb up to the moraine. Behind the moraine we meet the Suldenferner and over this we track up towards the Suldenspitze (danger of crevasses!). At about 3240 m below the northeast ridge of the Suldenspitze we climb to the left over a saddle. A slant to the right leads us through the steep eastern flank of the Suldenspitze. At this point we pay special attention to falling rocks. Snow slabs can also endanger us here. In flatter terrain, we keep heading south directly towards the Casatihütte (3254 m). From the Casatihütte, we follow the moderately steep glacier straight southeastwards until below the summits of Zufallspitze (left) and Cevedale (right). Below the lowest point on the ridge, we climb diagonally right up the slope to the Randkluft. Below this, we cross to the right until we reach the north shoulder of Cevedale via a short, steep slope (often bare ice). We may have to deposit our skis below the steep slope and continue on foot with crampons and ice axe. Across an initially wide, then narrowing ridge, we reach the summit to the right.

We descend along our ascent route. Below the Suldenspitze we can descend a little lower, then directly up to the saddle. On the descent over the Suldenferner glacier we keep to the far left and at about 2500 m turn right onto the ski slope. We follow this to the valley station and the car park.
