Gries - Winnebachseehütte - Western Geißlehnscharte
The Winnebachseehütte offers countless route options in winter. The hut´s winter season starts around mid-february. Before that you can spend the night in the nice winter room, which offers space for about 8 people. The route starts in Gries in the Sulztal. The ascent to the hut is at risk of avalanches due to the steep slopes to the right and left of the ascent lane. Therefore you should only start when the conditions are favorable. The way from the hut to the Western Geißlehnscharte is fairly safe in terms of avalanche risk, as you move in flat to moderately steep terrain. The long descent from the notch over the Bachfallferner back to the hut is an absolute dream with nice powder. The route is not without with 12 km route and almost 1500 m in the ascent. But you can stop and turn back at any time on the way to the notch on the Bachfallferner. The danger of crevices on the Bachfallferner is rather low in winter, so we didn´t use a rope.
