A demanding and challenging excursion in the heart of the Stelvio National Park.  Crossing the glacier from Monte Vioz (3.645m) you can reach Punta Linke (3.632m) one of the highest and most important Austrian-Hungarian positions during the Great War.

Author’s recommendation

From Monte Vioz the panorama is sensational: to the north the Palon de La Mare (3.703m) and the unmistakeable Cevedale (3.769m), to the west Punta San Matteo (3.678m), to the east the blue-green waters of the artificial Careser Dam, to the south the Val di Pejo and in the background the Brenta Dolomites and the Cima Presanella (3.556m).

Monte Vioz and Punta Linke

Turn-by-turn directions

Departure point is Peio Fonti from where you take the cable-car Tarlenta to Rifugio Scoiattolo and then the chair lift to Rifugio Doss dei Gembri (2.380m).  From the rifugio follow SAT 105, a military road dating back to 1915/1918, which ascends until reaching the ridge of Monte Vioz. Continuing uphill (the road is not too steep) passing the Dente del Vioz a characteristic tower formed like a tooth and some sharp bends your arrive at Brick (3.206m), a stretych of road equipped with metal rope (pay great attention here). The last part is also a series of sharp bends and finally reaches Rifugio Vioz Mantova (3.535m).

From here following, the summit until reaching Monte Vioz (3.645m), where there is an extraordinary panorama of the Thirteen Peaks, of Adamello-Presanella and the Brenta Dolomites. After a short walk on the glacier, you reach Punta Linke (3.631m) and the interesting archaeological site of the Great War. Over the last decades, the ice and the snow have conserved the entire fort in its original state, allowing the creation of an exceptional open-air museum at high altitude.
