Adventure on the glacier
High Mountain Trail from Rifugio Pio XI to the highest peak across the giant glacier

From Melag di Vallelunga - Langtaufers we reach the Rifugio Weisskugel (Pio X, 2542 m, 2:30 hours' walking time) as detailed in the previous route (see) for an overnight stay. The trail along the signposted Richter route is fairly flat for most of the hike to the small waterfall. We then climb up a zigzag trail on the edge of the Gepatschferner glacier. Any overhanging sections are equipped with a safety cable. This initially flat glacier soon gives way to a steeper side slope and beyond the giant ice block we will traverse an area with many exposed crevasses. The trail continues on a mostly flat glacier. We follow the track keeping an eye out for cracks buried under the snow. The last section is on rock and boulders leading up to the cross on the summit (3,532 m; 4 hours from the Rifugio). Return via the same route.
