This Romanesque church on the Tartscher Bühel near Mals is dedicated to St Veit and was built in the 11th century. A mighty stone wall surrounds this gem, and its interior is covered by a wooden ceiling which was crafted in the 16th century.
The Romanesque frescoes, of which only fragments are left, are of artistic and historic importance. There are visible scorch marks in some places; these can be dated back to the time of the Engadin war in 1499. The north wall has a cycle of frescoes depicting the martyrdom of St Vitus.
Also of significance is the winged altar from the workshop of the Swiss sculptor Ivo Strigel. During the Reformation, many of these altars in the Engadin region were destroyed or sold. Ever since that time, the altar has been part of St Veit church.
St Veit church occupies the ground of a pre-Christian place of worship on Tartscher Bühel.
