Humans in South Tyrol were once at the mercy of the region's waters. That is until they learnt to understand them, contain them and control them where they could. Gradually, swamps were drained, streams blocked up and reservoirs built. Water started being used for farming and tourism – the old irrigation canals are now gorgeous 'Waalweg' trails and the marshland of Etschtal has been transformed into apple orchards. Mountain lakes, streams and waterfalls should be part of any walk.
