The history of nature parks and natural monuments in South Tyrol began in 1970. Given that faith in unlimited economic growth was still unshaken at the time, it took great courage for the regional government to take a pro-environmental stance. In 1974, the Schlern nature park was founded, the first of its kind. 7 more followed later, covering a fifth of the region in total. Along with the nature parks there are also 1082 landmarks officially classified as natural monuments.
