Thick walls, steep slopes and countless rooms and cellars make this location the prime example of how Medieval constructions could be powerful and unconquerable. Federico I von Rodank commissioned the Rodéngo castle in 1140. Until the end of the lineage the castle remained of their property. The fortress was then under the administration of the Land masters until 1491 before being passed on to the Wolfenstein-Rodenegg counts. In the 16th century the family of the famous Oswald von Wolkenstein renovated the whole building. The descendants of this lineage are still today the owners of this castle.
The frescos representing the Iwein of Hartmann von Aue, of the 13th century but only restored in 1972, are worth being admired. These frescos are considered the most antique examples of laic wall paintings of Germanic countries. Also worth a visit: the S.Michele chapel, the armoury and garden of the castle.
Above the Rienza gorge as if glued to the mountain side the castle looks out onto the valley. In the Medieval times the Rodéngo castle was one of the most secure fortresses of the country.
