Museum of the Forest of Tarvisio
Museum
· Tarvisio
The Museum of the Forest of Tarvisio was born in 1988 out of the fruitful collaboration between the Società Autostrade (Motorway Association, the owning Body) and the Corpo Forestale dello Stato (State Forestry Corps, the managing Body).
The museum is located in the forest and provides the possibility to discover the environmental situation of the forest of the Tarvisio area, a forest that extends over 23,000 hectares and where it is easy to see the deer, the chamois, the roe deer and the ibex. Moreover, its valuable wood is used to make musical instruments of fine workmanship.
The Museum of the Forest can be reached from the northern carriageway of the Alpe Adria A23 Udine-Tarvisio Motorway, after the "Fella Est" service area in Bagni di Lusnizza, or from the SS.13 State road (a twenty-minute walk from the car park).
The visitor centre, which carries out free educational activities for schools, is divided into three sections aimed at teaching visitors the flora and the fauna of the Forest of Tarvisio.
The first section consists of the educational centre, a permanent exhibition dedicated to the ecological-forest aspect and is supported by photos, plastic models and dioramas. Outside, the botanical garden represents the local forest environment. With a 500-metre walk, visitors will have the chance to discover the local vegetation arranged according to an altimetric succession: wet grassland, beech wood, mixed beech-spruce wood, larch wood, lily of the valley, Alpine grassland, rock.
Moreover, the Museum of the Forest of Tarvisio is the starting point of various nature trails that stretch up to the sulphur springs of Bagni di Lusnizza.
The ecological area of the Museum of the Forest is the ideal location for short breaks thanks to the large parking area, the toilets, the picnic areas and the information point managed by the State Forestry Corps.
