The aim of the museums of Sappada is to raise the profile of its historical, linguistic and environmental identity:the interconnected museums, in fact, cover different and complementary aspects of local life.

Casa-Museo della Civiltà Contadina (House-Museum of Country Life)

Puicher s’Kottlars haus / schtòl

The old Puicher s’Kottlars in Cretta village, inhabited, without substantial alterations to its structure, until the eighties, was taken over by the Municipality of Sappada in 1990, restored with full respect for the principles of philological restoration and adapted for use as the Casa-Museo della Civiltà Contadina. The typical rural architecture and the varieties of mountain crops in the vegetable garden alongside the building bring the daily life of the families of Sappada in the past back to life for visitors, directly experiencing the places, domestic customs and lifestyle. The Puicher s’Kottlars house complex is an interesting example of a simple home with barn-haystack attached, dating from the second quarter of the 19th century. Entering the corridor (labe), which runs in the traditional east-west direction through the building, the kitchen (kuchl) is on the first floor, blackened by smoke from the open hearth (offns vair) where food hanging from the ceiling (eesn) was smoked; the atmosphere of the dining room (kòschtibe) was very different since the wood insulated the heat from the vaulted masonry stove (kòchlouvn) in the corner, fed through an appropriate opening in the corridor. After visiting the bed chamber on the ground floor, a steep staircase in the corridor leads to the second floor:here, there is a second bed chamber and a small room (kemmerle) used as a little workshop for manual work, where a variety of equipment can be found. The gallery runs along three sides of the second floor and, on the east side, there is a small gravity toilet (gònk). The roof is clad with larch wood shingle. Unlike most dwellings in Sappada, the stable (schtòl) and barn (dille) are joined to the building, rather than independent buildings close to the house. Alongside the house, a garden (gòrte) where vegetables and cereals were cultivated that once grew in the valley.
