Moggio Udinese is a small town in Val Canale that, in spite of the 1976 earthquake, has preserved its charm.
In Moggio Alto you will reach the abbey, rich in history and charm.
The origin of the site gets lost in the mists of time, first a Roman settlement, then a medieval castle, afterwards an Abbey.
The Abbey was consecrated by patriarch Voldarico in 1119 and was extremely important in the historic events of Canal del Ferro and Carnia.

In addition to the Abbey dedicated to Saint Gall the Abbot, the complex includes the cloister, the Convent of the Clarisse Sacramentine Nuns, which welcomes pilgrims and visitors, the Medieval Tower, which is also known as the Prison Tower and which now houses exhibitions of various kinds, and the Abbey Library; an Antiquarium will be set up soon.
Just outside the walls, the stone pillory of 1653, one of the last four left in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
But it is in winter that Moggio Udinese reaches its maximum splendour, when the shop windows and the Medieval Tower are decorated by the master Nativity scene craftsmen, who every year display their works here.
