The historical village heart is enchanting. Long-past eras and modern architecture come face-to-face on a stroll through the lanes of Andermatt.

Due to the original settlers coming from the Bündner Oberland and Upper Valais, to this day the Ursern Valley shows evidence of its very own structural culture compared with the rest of the canton. The well-preserved village heart is of national significance. A whole row of stately houses in Rococo style can be found here. A typical feature of Andermatt are the traditional timber houses on a walled base. Open arcades and stony open-air staircases additionally characterise the village’s profile. The Gotthardstrasse, paved in natural stone and divided down the middle with granite slabs, is reminiscent of the time when the legendary Gotthard mail coaches once thundered through Andermatt.

Village walking tour

Using the village map, which is available in six languages at the Tourist Information (in front of the railway station), tourists will find the sights in Andermatt independently and easily on foot. The famous Devil’s Bridge and Schöllenen Gorge can be reached on foot from Andermatt station in about 20 minutes.

A tip: Combine the village walking tour with a visit to the Valley Museum.
