Das Heimatmuseum hat sich zur Aufgabe gesetzt, in seinen Schauräumen, deren es 10 besitzt, anhand der ausgestellten Gegenstände Einblicke zu geben in die Entwicklung der Stadt und ihrer Umgebung im Laufe der Geschichte. Das Heimatmuseum ist im ehemaligen Burgtor untergebracht und damit bereits durch seine Architektur, sein Alter und seine Bedeutung ein wesentlicher Zeuge Schärdinger Vergangenheit.Die Räume dienten einst der Torwache und haben Stubencharakter. Es galt diese für geschlossene Sachgebiete zu nutzen, aber auch einen losen chronologischen Leitfaden durchzuziehen.
