Swabian Alb

The Swabian Alb is a low mountain range in southern Germany with foothills into Switzerland. The plateau is separated from the Alb foothills in the northwest by the Albtrauf, a prominent break-off edge. The Swabian Alb is known for numerous geological features such as former volcanoes and karst caves as well as cultural legacies of people from all eras such as pile dwellings, border ramparts, objects of art, castles and monasteries.

The low mountain range, formerly also called Swabian Jura, extends over 200 km in length and 35 to 40 km in width, mainly in Baden-Württemberg, but also in small parts of Bavaria and Switzerland. The Swabian Alb reaches its highest point on the summit of the Lemberg at 1015 m. The plateau is divided by erosional influences, drops steeply in the northwest over the Alb, while it flattens in the southeast and merges into the Alpine foothills.

Two rivers surround the Swabian Alb: Danube and Neckar. Both still run wild and unspoilt here, meandering through the valleys and digging deep gorges with rugged rock faces into the landscape. Through picturesque towns and wooded valleys, accompanied by nature reserves and castles and palaces, the two rivers meander through the Swabian Alb.

Natural highlights of the Swabian Alb

A special feature of the Swabian Alb is of course the Albtrauf, the 1000 m high and 200 km long rocky ridge that separates the high plateau from the gentle Alb foothills. The plateau consists of limestone beech forests, juniper heaths and flower meadows and offers fantastic viewing balconies and pulpits on the steep ridge. Rock towers, valleys, witness mountains, castles and the plain of the foothills can be seen. By the way, Eduard Mörike called the Albtrauf "Blue Wall".

In the mountains of the Swabian Alb there are about 2500 caves, which were dug into the karst rock by rivers. Among them are the famous "Blautopfhöhle", the "Laichinger Tiefenhöhle" as the deepest accessible shaft cave of Germany, the "Charlottenhöhle" as one of the longest show caves of Southern Germany as well as the "Hohle Fels" – known through the discovery of Venus of Hohle Fels.

In addition to the caves there are other geological features in the Swabian Alb: The Steinheim Basin was formed by a meteorite impact and numerous volcanic vents adorn the plateau of the Swabian Alb. Although volcanic activity has not existed for a long time, the heat still warms the water of the thermal baths in the region today.

Active on the Swabian Alb

Active vacationers come to admire the beautiful landscape and the numerous cultural treasures. Hikers are on well-marked trails, no matter whether on a route or a round trip, there is something for everyone. On the way, the views from the Albtrauf to the Albvorland, the Black Forest and the Alps are impressive. The near-natural paths run through juniper heaths and mysterious caves, past turquoise blue spring pots and shady gorge forests.

On the bike, you will overcome numerous ups and downs – with the exception of the Danube cycle path, which mainly winds flat along the river bank. On the Alb-Neckar Cycle Path, however, one experiences the Swabian Alb as a low mountain range and also the Swabian Alb Cycle Path, the Hohenzollern Cycle Path, the Hohenlohe-Ostalb Cycle Path as well as the Alb Valley Cycle Path wait with a few meters in altitude. For the very sporty ones there are several bike parks where downhill mountain bikers get their money's worth.

The Swabian Alb is a popular area for rock climbing – next to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and the Franconian Alb the outstanding low mountain range of Germany when it comes to climbing. Especially at the mass limestone cliffs you will find possibilities to test your skills. The best conditions and the highest walls can be found in the Upper Danube Valley.
