Ascent: From Lutago – Luttach (962 m, road from Campo Tures) by bus or hitchhike to Riobianco – Weissenbach (1,334 m). Following the directions marked 24, which runs north up to the Gögealm alpine hut (2,027 m, with refreshments); continuing on route 24 westwards takes you to the Rifugio Giovanni Porro – Chemnitzer Hütte (2,419 m, open in summer; 2.5 – 3 hours. Overnight stay optional).
The Stabeler High Route: We descend via the same route for 15 minutes, then turn left at the intersection (2,300 m) onto route 24a (Stabelerweg footpath), walking up on patches of snow to the Gelenkscharte Col (2,724 m). We descend to the other side on boulders, with the aid of metal ropes, to the Sandrain cirque (2,450 m), then walk back up a zigzag trail to the Schwarzenbachtörl Col (2,554 m). We descend to the second cirque (2,480 m) with the aid of metal ropes, and then trudge up to the Zu Törla Col (2,704 m). Going down the third cirque across boulders and a sharp ridge (with fixed ropes) and a moraine to reach the path that from the valley leads to the Rifugio Vittorio Veneto al Sasso Nero – Schwarzensteinhütte, at approx. 300 metres below the refuge (about 2,620 m ; 5 – 6 hours on the high route. Strenuous hour-long descent to the refuge, open in summer 2,922 m).
Descent: From the intersection we walk down a steep route marked 23, which runs along pastures and through a wood and mountain huts leading down to the valley; at the intersection we continue on route 23 to the right reaching the Lutago – Luttach huts (about 3 hours' descent). You can return by bus.
This route is suitable for expert, fit mountaineers; some tricky sections are equipped with fixed ropes.
Rio Bianco - Weißenbach
By train to Brunico then bus to Riobianco - Weißenbach.
Walk back up the Val Pusteria to Brunico then turn off for the Valle Aurina, passing Campo Tures towards Lutago - Luttach and all the way to Riobianco - Weißenbach.
